Let's talk about an easy at-home activity you can do with your child to support speech and language! Books are a quick, easy way to target various skills. Did you know that by the time a child starts school, their vocabulary is roughly 5,000 words? This means, on average, a child between the ages of 1-5 learns approximately 3.5 words daily. For this to happen, a child needs a lot of exposure to language, and books are a great way to expose your child to language.
You can target vocabulary words, prepositions, synonyms/antonyms, rhyming words, describing, following directions, grammar, and even articulation skills while reading books with your child. Additionally, reading supports cognitive development, improves imagination and creativity, and helps build social and emotional development.
Begin to build reading at least one book a day to your children. Reading together can be a fun, silly activity and a wonderful bonding experience.
